A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the small Matchbox-cars in 1:87-scale (are they in 1:87-scale ???) give me a lot of pleasure, especially when the tiny boxes are present.
I used to collect them around the beginning of the 1970's, when I was about ten years old.
I bought them just to play with and they cost around 1.5 Dutch Guilder each.
Most of them got beaten up, but some didn't.
They are still there with their boxes.
It is a joy to see them, displayed with their flashy boxes...
I would see it as a dead-end collection coming back to life.....
Here is an example of one of my models, this is a picture from a person called diecastinvestor from the Internet.
Hi Joop,
Those Matchbox cars, this one from 1970, were made to fit boxes rather than be of an exact scale although most of the cars seem about 1/64 scale with buses and trucks likely 1/76 to 1/87. In the 1980s there were probably only worth a few dollars but that is no longer the case, as you may have noticed. I have sold a few of the hard to find original wheel series, mint boxed closer to $100 US recently. I sold them to make way for other collectibles. The Superfasts have not reached that lofty height as yet.
I had quite a few back in the mid to late '50's to go with my 2-4'X8' sheets of ply wood HO train lay out, i was told they were 1:87 scale and at the time looked quite good with the trains & buildings. The little yellow box, they had more than one size back then with some being bigger than a real matchbox. Back then none of them I saw were as big as 1:64 or they would have looked out of place in an HO lay out, I tried a couple of 1:64 and quickly removed them. The only problem with Matchbox was they were all English vehicles and my HO trains were America, but most people did not seem to notice.
I still have many of them; most in NM, M or MB condition. I like the Moko Lesney Matchbox earlier era best by far. They are very nostalgic for me.
