That does look problematic.

to say the LEAST !!!.......same contractor who`d previously designed and installed the stairless towers? 🤔
I think they were probably doing a half-scale practice run, safely inside the walls, before tackling the project for real. Very commendable, I'd say, but of course customers sometimes fail to appreciate how professionals go about ensuring the best result. (I should emphasise that I am NOT a paid mouthpiece for the construction industry.)

Graeme, you can come up with a plausible reason for almost anything. Others might suggest it is Bull by-product.
Well, a simpler explanation came to me in the shower a few minutes ago - "The mislaid plans of mason men . . . . "

This was a true incident. Fortunately the quick thinking contractor saved himself from the prisoner stocks, cut his losses and created the world's first lap pool.

Yes, that's the guy. Otis, I think his name was. Clever chap but didn't always think things through quite carefully enough in detail.
He later moved to Spain where he built several very successful horizontal versions of the stairless tower, trading under the name El Evator.
Although he attended several civil engineering symposia in Italy he unfortunately never encountered Leonardo, who had just patented a steam powered rope-and-pulley system, or the world might have looked very different.
