Interesting optics. I first noticed this as a child watching a steam engine gain traction. The wheels suddenly appeared to rotate backwards.

It's rather like the stage-wagon wheel.  (Nice to see a London tube train from the comfort of my little Paris pad).

Yep. Same as watching a mag wheel on the car next to you or the propeller of an airplane.
