I had a variation of that in my '53 Plymouth.  A real dog and if I remember right it used engine oil - a lot of it.

A friend has a 48 Chrysler with Fluid Drive which I have driven. The transmission is remarkably smooth but you can't be in a hurry to get where you're going.
