It's a chilly Minnesota morning.  The temps are creeping down overnight, and the realization that Fall is slowly changing to Winter, my first warm cup of coffee wakes me up and provides the jolt I need/want to begin another day.  Having finished my prayers I felt the need for music to relax me while I finish my second cup of coffee and eating my toast.  This is where my mind went.

This Month in Music History
"SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN"
The song hit #1 on the Billboard Charts on Oct. 10, 1970.

Written by and given to Johnny Cash by Kris Kristofferson, Johnny sang the song on his hit ABC-TV show.

Johnny was warned by the producers to NOT say the line "Wishing to the Lord that I was Stoned", as they didn't feel it appropriate for prime time TV. The show being "live", Johnny was going to debut the song.  When he got to that (producer prohibited) line, he pointed up to the balcony of the Ryman Auditorium where the show was being aired, pointed a finger right at Kristofferson who was sitting in the front row, and he blurted out the line!

The censors were livid, but said afterward, "Guess we should have known we couldn't control Johnny". Bottom line is, when asked about it later, Johnny said that the song would have lost its impact and message had he left that line out.  I think history proves him right.

It became one of his all-time greatest hits.

Being the life-long huge Johnny Cash fan I am, and being able to boast that I have every album and every CD he released, my personal #1 favorite song of his is, "Sunday Morning Coming Down". It is a "mood and reflecting" song that really puts life itself in to perspective. The song is "deep in feeling and reality". If one listens to it ever so closely, life is portrayed in it and it's all of us that it portrays.

I never get tired of hearing it and it keeps me grounded.

A coincidence.  While driving to meet a friend for lunch earlier today, the song on the radio when I turned it on, was "Sunday Morning Coming Down".  A smile took over my face while recounting that I'd made the post above, this morning.

Way to go, Johnny ! Don't take baloney from faceless suits lurking behind the scenes who many times try and tell artists what to say and think about anything and everything.

George,

I remember a long, long, time ago when you were hardly ever here and now you've become one of the stop rising stars on the forums. For that, I am grateful.

Interesting kind words Steve.  Thank you!  I enjoy sharing things that have challenged and shaped me during my time here on the planet.  In a weird sort of way, I find relief in putting words to my thoughts and adventures.  The fact that you and some others enjoy them, is refreshing.  My sharing them keeps me sane.  Smile

And though I've never mentioned this, I do keep everything I write in a journal, and yes, it's titled, "Coffee Talks".
