Yes black lights are actually ULTRA VIOLET.
Lol ! I had also heard that these were used at some point as intakes for carburetor air, perhaps somewhat along the lines of the later GM Oldsmobile 442.
Sure, why not. These cars were highly modified and needed all the help they could get to increase their stopping power. And of course, the fans loved it.

This has always been the thing with U.S. motorsport: the spectacle! Not just going round and round like a hamster in a wheel; there's the carnival too. Indy 500; Drag Racing; Demolition Derby, all so exciting.
