I know I'm in the minority with my liking the '58 General Motors brand line-up (with the exception of Cadillac), but I have always thought they were incredibly and beautifully designed for the "chrome/fin era" they represented.

Of these two GM examples, I think the Oldsmobile, is Oldsmobile in its finest elegance.  My Dad bought a new '58 Olds and when I think back to how my little 7 year old eyes popped out when I saw it, time stops for me every time I think of that car.  It was out of this world gorgeous!

Absolutely desperate attempts to gussy up ageing designs. The Olds in particular looks like a fat old tart dripping with cheap jewellery. The Buick is marginally less awful so I give it a score of  -1 (and a generous -5 for the Olds)

These two rank just about the bottom of American 1950s cars for styling IMO.

Aside from the unassailable ugliness of early '60s Chrysler Corp. offerings, 1958 has to rank as a singularly awful year for US automotive design. However, things aren't as bad as they seem. Here is the Buick Limited, whose back end is not nearly as deranged as its Buick cousins (overlooking the aggressive bumper guards). And so I would choose this, for its relative restraint Unamused  and very stylish grille .

LOL, as I said in my post above, I know I'm in the minority on this one, because I think these '58's are beautiful.

Some of you use the word "ugly" when describing them.  I remember that some years back here on the Forum's, I was seriously taken to task by some posters for calling a car ugly.  I'd argued at the time, that if a car could be "beautiful", then a car could also be "ugly".

I was again told by some here on the Forum's that I was being rude and inconsiderate of others feelings.  Guess the times, they have changed.

I like both of them very much ! They're part of the "GM Five for Fifty-Eight" automobile line up. I have several of the 1958 Buick Limited SunStar1/18ths and our neighbor had a gorgeous black 1958 1:1 Oldsmobile. It is unfortunate Precision Miniatures wasn't around long enough to do their cool 1958 Oldsmobile.

Both over the top which for 58 was the point I imagine.  I prefer the more sinister looking Buick grille and very cool rear window.  👍

The only GM offering uglier than these two is the ‘59 Cadillac…

@georgeschire George, I would be surprised if any of us would turn either down, if a mate told us they were emigrating and would we like the keys?
