Coffee cup in hand, I was remembering my dad's many cars he owned when I was kid. There were so many!
One in particular was a 1953 LINCOLN COSMOPOLITAN. I was 12 years old when he was driving that one and I recall thinking that, "I thought Lincoln's were supposed to be luxury cars". This one sure wasn't! At least to my eyes it wasn't. Of course at the time, I wasn't taking in to consideration that it was a 10 year old car 1963.
It was a 4-door sedan and didn't seem much different looking than our neighbor's '53 Ford. In fact, the neighbor had white-wall tires on his car, our Lincoln didn't. So that Ford looked pretty snazzy! The other thing about our Lincoln was, my dad called it a "beater", and I had to ask him what a "beater" was. Though I'm sure in its day, our Lincoln was quite the ride and looker too, for that matter, it was not now. Faded dark green paint, rust appearing around the rear wheel wells and on the trunk lid, I just didn't see anything special about that car. A short time later, something called a "main bearing" went out, that's the story my dad told, and the Lincoln was gone.
The name LINCOLN was neatly displayed across the front of the hood. The hood emblem was placed in the massive bumper grille molding and a winged hood ornament with a sphere was placed on the top of hood, supposedly giving a look of fleetness. On the side of our COSMOPOLITAN was a gold "V" crest placed next to the name. The COSMOPOLITAN offered power steering, power brakes, power seat, electric windows, and all the regular options such as radio, heater, and whitewalls (hmmm, where were they on my dad's car?). My index card for this Lincoln tells me that brand new it cost $3,522.
As "they" say, hindsight is always 20/20, and it sure is for me, because looking back now, that COSMOPOLITAN was really a pretty cool car!
We appear to be on the same track...Here is my quote from your 2/25/2022 "Coffee Talk" regarding the Lincoln....
"To me, the fit, finish and the engine sound were quite similar to my dad's '56 Ford Fairlane. As beautiful as the Lincoln was, I always felt overall it's just a big Ford".
Lol, had a 53’ Lincoln Cosmopolitan 2dr hardtop back in 1969 ….yep by that point the moniker Beater fit pretty well, though wouldn’t mind having it back today, ran well and actually wasn’t that bad of a looking car. did pick up a inexpensive 1/18 strangely in green that in my pictures looks the two tone Blue that mine was!

Indeed, we felt the same way John. It wasn't until the beautiful '56's that Lincoln became its own car and style.

I have that 1:18 model Larry. Though I only have 18 models in 1:18 scale, that Lincoln is one of them.
I always liked the look of the Mercurys much better than the Lincolns from 1949 thru '55. Couldn't compare tp the Cadillac and Imperial IMHO.
Jack, I agree with you about Lincoln's not comparing to Cadillac in those early 50's years. And I think that is way I didn't see the fuss made over Lincoln's and their bragging to be a top end car like Caddy was. The Lincoln's just looked like Ford's with a different grille and taillights. But in 1956, that all changed. Lincoln hit a home run that year and was definitely as beautiful and luxurious as the '56 Caddy.

George my comment about the Lincoln being just a big Ford was all about the '56 Lincoln.

Thanks for the clarification John. I misread your post. Perhaps I'm seeing the '56 Lincoln in a different light than you are. The Lincoln that year looked nothing like the Ford to my eyes. I feel '56 was the breakthrough year for Lincoln in becoming a true luxury car.

I said nothing about the way it looks.
LOL, I'm going to grab an Excedrin. I knew I shouldn't have stopped at one cup of coffee this morning.
