I never thought I would be owning this model, wasn’t even on the back burner. After all, I was thrilled to finally get the DM Surf Woody and I dearly love it. Of course I had known of the FM version and have seen it several times for sale, usually at very high asking prices. I thought the display stand that played Jan and Deans song ‘Surf City’ seemed pretty cool but did I really need two surf woodies.Turns out, mayhaps I do. ‘Surfing’ through eBay last night I ran across this auction for a new in the box model at a fraction of the price that I would have expected. At first I thought that I’d get it and flip it, but the more I’m thinking, the more I’m thinking….oh well, we’ll see.
Frank’s Ford is cool but I think Dan’s Merc is way cooler!
A total sleeper!! Easily one of my very favorite models. At that price you should be looking for the police, FBI and CIA!!
D4C founder, Jay Olins, attended a California Franklin Mint outlet which had scheduled Jan & Dean to appear and they signed the base of the model for anyone who bought it. Jay bought two of them and had Jan & Dean sign the surf boards as well. These were the only two units where they signed the boards. He kept one and I won the other on a spcial auction sale to benefit the club - and no it was substantially more than $89. HA! I added other Jan & Dean poster before Jan's death March 2004.

Thank’s guys, I’m actually getting excited to keep the model, especially after all of your comments. What a great experience for you Tony, that would have had to been gnarly bro!
PS…you should have kept the goatee, looked totally sick dude!

Cowabunga! Here's the original review that goes with the model - scroll down past the pics. It's 21 years old!!
@whodeytink Talk about highway…er, I mean beach robbery Mark, I held out for about 150- a couple years back, around half of what the NIB were going for. You are right the model is so cool with all the details and eye candy. I want to thank Sir Tony here too for the added info, you da man, man!
I am really happy for you Kevin. I have the DM Merc but never acquired this one. The primary reason I never bought this one was because all of my FM and DM models are in my Carney cases and I had no room for the base which makes the model. Maybe if I come across a deal like yours, I might buy the model and store the base which would be a shame as it tells the story.
