Today is now officially the hottest May day ever recorded in the UK since records began. 34ºC (95ºF) at Heathrow airport (and 34.5ºC on the kitchen thermometer hanging on the old apple tree in our back garden). Tomorrow is predicted to be a degree or two warmer before dropping back to a rather chilly 24ºC on Wednesday but back into the 30s by the weekend.

Rather bizarrely, the weather people tell us that instead of coming from the Mediterranean as usual, the flow of air that carried all this heat to our shores originated in Canada!

As all forumeers are well aware, the Canadians have a prodigious source of hot air based in the vicinity of Sylvan Lake, which is where this momentous meteorological event probably started life, and on behalf of all us folks in the GMT zone I offer our heartfelt thanks for this welcome outpouring of warmth (although I know he was probably just doing what comes naturally, without giving it a second thought).

On the other hand, hasn't President Trump repeatedly expressed an interest in annexing Greenwich, by force if necessary? It WAS Greenwich he was talking about, wasn't it? So maybe this is just him turning up the heat, though how he persuaded the Canadians to help I can't imagine. Geopolitics and meteorology are two of my weak points. (I have many others, but we won't go into that now. It's just too damn hot).

Graeme;

Thank you so much for your sensitive, supportive commentary, which I plan to use as much needed "international sourced" proof to my missus that I still offer some small measure of positivity in this world of ours.  For some reason she tends to think the degree of "hot air" emanating from our neighborhood is largely responsible for most of the melting polar ice cap but I always support her and counter that at least half of her communication is based on some semblance of rational thought.  She is far too hard on herself.  Besides is it not just a little bit coincidental that this heat source coincides with our Prime Minister being currently in Alberta spouting his green drivel?  Not a judgement....just saying what are the odds?

No political discussion requested.

Nor will it be offered.

I don't quite know how to judge the odds you refer to. But I still think you're the hot favourite.

I am just off for a prowl round our local common

Tooting Common 1
Tooting Common 2

to see if there are any victims of fatal dehydration or heatstroke who may have items of personal jewellery, petty cash, stylish trainers or industrial-strength alcohol they have no further use for and that shouldn't be left to clutter our precious green spaces.

We, too, are feeling the effects of the heatwave and I have offered the gods a sacrifice in thanks for suggesting I install an A/C system several years ago.  Perhaps they would accept a politician, or two?

I'm feeling a bit grumpy. So far this year where I live in Ontario, Canada, we have had only two days above 25 degrees, Celsius, with most days under 10.

I guess all the Canadian hot air must be in Alberta.
