First 28 year of my life I lived on the Far Mill River, the last 20 years I am living on the Dan Hole River and love rivers but I still don't like fishing. Poor fish hanging from a hook gasping for breath and the adult tells the child that caught it, what a good/great job they did, no mention of KILLING a living creature that had no intention to hurt anyone and the child probably does not like to eat fish or they catch and release after the hook does its job as well as the trauma of being pulled out of the water thus shortening the fish life.
@larry-kemling Interesting points of view Bruce and Larry. We all have our own ways of viewing fishing and hunting and of course I respect that. I haven't hunted in many years but buy my meat like most people. Taking animals allowed to roam as nature intended is IMHO a far preferable existence for them and of course the meat is better for you. Free range animals are my preference now, when I can find it. Cost can be an issue though. I personally have no problem with fishing for food, but simply see no point in catch and release. Once again though, each to his own. Generally speaking, I believe all animals have predators and we IMHO are part of that chain. Our responsibility is to keep it balanced because when numbers become too great they suffer terribly. Just one persons opinion.
I was raised poring over Boy`s Life,Field & Stream,Walden Pond and The Compleat Angler.....at 70,I am a product of my generation....perhaps the future will produce a kinder gentler population and we`ll all be that much better for it
@john-barry At the fish farm....just kidding. They kill bugs/insects and of course water based vegetation....but I'm sure you know much more about their food sources than I do John. One place they very rarely choose to eat is my baited hook!
except for vegetarian species of fish,like the mullets in FL,fish are carnivorous,omnivorous and cannibalistic...the breaded ones are among the most dangerous.......opportunist eaters, they will, when feeding, devour just about anything that halfway fits in their mouths.......a notable exception to this murderous behavior, is anything you might present to them Jack......next time,try an O`Henry Bar
What a cutie.....I think I just became vegetarian. Seriously though, I'm sure this catfish would go for O'Henry bait...after all, it is the king of candyland!
@john-barry JB, I know your picture is probably of a pet catfish from your home aquarium, but I gotta tell you....when I first saw it I flashed back to my ex-wife's divorce lawyer. They could be twins.
