Interesting to say the least and of course a tremendous way to preserve historical accuracy. 

I suspect one day, affordable home-scanning equipment will make it possible to precisely "model" (reproduce) virtually anything. Simply feed scanning data into your 3-D printer and once all the parts have been created, it will simply be a matter of paint & assembly.  The operative word here, of course, is "affordability."  Currently, these sophisticated methods are cost prohibited for most.
