The English ladies' soccer team, whose unmatched prowess and near-superhuman world-beating potential has occupied the front pages (and indeed most of the other pages) of our newspapers for days, has just been defeated 1-0 by Spain in the women's World Cup final. Distraught crowds aimlessly walk the streets in their uncounted millions, shock and bewilderment etched into their tear-stained faces. Flags are flying at half-mast, three days of national mourning have been declared, King Charles is said to be "inconsolable" and may be contemplating abdication, and unconfirmed reports are coming in of mass suicides (by lethal alcohol ingestion) in bars and social venues around the country. Dozens of temporary PTSD treatment centres are being hastily assembled and staffed.
It is this country's darkest moment since the Permian-Triassic extinction event 251.9 million years ago (GMT) and I can only ask that your thoughts and prayers are with the English nation at this tragic time.
Me? Well I watched a replay of the goal, had a good laugh, then went over to Sky Arts and watched Bob Ross paint some happy little mountains, evergreens and log cabins so I'm feeling quite relaxed about the whole thing. But then I am noted for my lack of social empathy.

Oh well Graeme, second place for the women is much better than the men usually get. It has been a long time since 1966. It was an entertaining series and final game.
Now, about that social empathy, or lack of……….
@david-green Yes, well, I have vaguely - and somewhat late in life - been thinking about seeking treatment for sociopathic tendencies but as you will understand, in the current circumstances all of the nation's psychiatric consultants will now be overwhelmed with more urgent cases for months or years to come.
So just don't provoke me. That's all I'm saying.

As an overture of sincere congeniality might I suggest that you save your hard earned money and simply continue as a daily contributor to The Forum. The tendencies that concern you are shared by most of us here and in fact we collectively see it as a condition of higher enlightenment. In other words we model collectors know better than psychiatrists who, to be perfectly frank, are nothing more than medical doctors with a bit more education and higher student loan debts.
When did girls start playing soccer??
Graeme, this says more about England's parlous state than it does about football.

I thought parlous was an adjective meaning an overly chatty Frenchman........
@jack-dodds Given the post came from Paris, perhaps you were right. But in reference to England's present state, best read "shite" !
