Here is a 1946 Packard Coupe that, frankly, does not appeal at all given its ride height and excess side trim.

But I very much like the overall shape of this car and did some photo edits to see what it looks like with some changes.

As found:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (1)

Lowered significantly dechromed and with slightly smaller wheels/tires:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (2)

Radiused rear wheel opening and slight bumper reshape:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (3)

Added top height but retained the prior wheel/tire combination:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (3a)

Added some top height, changed wheel/tire combination:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (4)

Sectioned at the beltline, left added top height:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (5)

Changed top to 'as found' height:

46 Packard Sedan Custom PS (6)

The car changes a good deal, especially after the rear wheel opening radius. The slightly changed top height also makes a difference to the overall presentation.

Share courteous comments if you wish.

Enjoy!

I like the original Packard and all the modifications, too. It is a strong design and so I think it beautifully handles the customizations, also. And I don't even have to ask the man (or woman) who owns one to like all these !

Masterful manipulations! I like open wheel wells on the vast majority of cars. However, I'll take #2 in a heartbeat! It's more 'Packard-Regal' looking to me. It keeps the air of dignity that I see in the original but loses the extraneous chrome, front and rear, while keeping with more modern tire size and lower ride height. Grand work, you ol' car designer you!!

*Edit: By the way, is there ANY car of any era that possibly has a larger door than this one? Holy porto!

@jack-dodds #3 for me as well. Radiusing the rear wheel well made the car look more balanced IMO.

Given that many of you like the third edit the best, I've added another photo right after that with the smaller Packard wheel/tire combination and a bit of added top height. I'm torn between this edit and the one you've selected. Does the added edit, 3a, change your choice?

I prefer #3 over 3a.
