I am reading an article about the K-cars, not to confuse with the Japansese Kei-cars.

An article in Collectible Automobile.

Around here I see a neglected convertible from around 1983 I guess.

Will ask the owner if he decides to restore it, but I am afraid he just has it for the ride, because I saw it some years ago for the first time and nothing new happened to it.

Too bad.

Any one of you guys had one ?

1983 Plymouth Reliant, 2 door, 2.2, 5 speed std., bucket seats, bigger tires I ordered it.  It was one of the first cars to use the new "Lemon law" in Conn.  What a good looking car if you like square [I do], but a junk.

Joop.... if the photo album was handy (I know where it is, but I'm too lazy to dig it out... ) I'd post a pic of me with my newer 1981 Plymouth Reliant K-car.

I was impressed, even at 20, with Chrysler's turn-around and their ALL NEW FWD "modern looking"  K-cars, so I bought one - a loaded sedan.  I thought I was so cool for having such a luxurious car.     HA!    It was reliable but man-0-man - it was cheap & underpowered!

AND, being only 20, I was teased mercilessly by everyone.  Dates would duck, below the windows, but their grandmas loved it!  I had another car - a Chevette - but that didn't score any points either.

Needless to say, I kept the car for a SHORT time a traded it in on a loaded 1984 Pontiac Trans Am H.O. - no one ever teased me again.

My advice:   If you have to have the convertible make sure you get a later year - with quarter windows - and get one with LOW miles.     Durability was NOT their strong suit; honestly though, I'd look elsewhere.     Some of those woody convertibles & turbo Le Barons are cool looking, but.....

I had a 1984 Dodge 600 ES Turbo Convertible; I was thrilled to get this car because at the time I thought it was very cool. It was nothing like cool. The worst car I've ever had. I was able to unload it and got an '83 Chevy Celebrity, dealer demo car. The 2nd worst car I've ever owned.

I briefly owned an '83 Plymouth Reliant 2-door Sedan, white with a blue vinyl top. I believe a 4-speed stick and I had a sunroof installed. My wife drove this '85 Dodge 600 convertible until we moved to Texas, in 1991. With decent tires ant the turbo engine, it was a fun car to drive. Not great quality but overall a decent car that served her well.

Wow.... I'm really surprised at the number of K-car owners there are (were ) on this Forum.   I honestly thought I was the only sucker ...  I mean "one."    😉

Yes sir, K-cars, the Mustang, 1969 Lincolns, the Minivan and several others - Lee was one-of-a-kind!   AND - the new Pope, Leo XIV, looks just like him!  😀 😀 😀

The K cars are thankfully some I avoided but the Pinto was one that caught my wife and in turn me.

I had a Reliant wagon with standard trans, an Aires sedan and Reliant 2dr.  I know their build quality wasn't great but the wagon and sedan were great basic transportation.  Not sure why but the 2dr. was garbage....maybe a Friday afternoon assembly.

HA!

...as promised, me with my new 1981 Plymouth Reliant K.    I was so proud, until I was teased relentlessly 🙄 😫 - then I purchased a loaded 1984 Trans Am H.O. and was never teased again!  😀 😎

"You wish you still had the Plymouth?"

No, I owned it for almost 3 years, that was LONG enough...  it was reliable, but grossly underpowered and very cheap!    I was too young for that car; EVERYONE was puzzled when I bought it.   As I noted, I traded it in on a loaded '84 T/A H.O. - that made me was "cool"  again.  😎 😎

@chris I love the color of your Trans-Am...best of all colors offered IMHO.  Your post strikes a chord with me; I had an '85 Z-28 identical to this one.  It was a fun ride!
