Lately I read that the European version of the Cannonball AND the Gumball Rally were only for the richest?
Is the American version still comparable to the old ones from the beginning ?

Even the old ones were expensive if you were serious about competing.
Your car had to be very fast, well screwed together and there was a lot of preparation ahead of time. It was not an event for those without some type of financial backing or independence.
