I am sad to report that John Quilter who I am sure many of you have known and/or read his many articles here on modeling, passed away suddenly on Christmas Day. I don't have many details, but his passing was quite a shock to those of us that knew him and shared his love for both modeling and British cars. This is from our local British car club email. I can only echo these sentiments and that we have lost a great friend.
Greetings Club members. I've just learned from Dan Palanuk that John Quilter's funeral Mass is scheduled for 12:15 pm, Thursday, February 19th at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1062 Charnelton St.
As most of you know John passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Day. In addition to being a good neighbor and friend John was a deep reservoir of knowledge regarding British cars and history having spent a career in British automotive sales and service in the bay area. He was also very proud of his service as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.In addition to serving as our Club Treasurer John was very active in many other organizations and causes. He was a frequent contributor to various motoring magazines and was a familiar voice in the Register Guard's Letters to the Editor section.John will certainly be missed.
Oh, how terribly sad..... I was unaware AND I WILL MISS HIM dearly! I complimented him ALL the time; his ability to create scale replicas was a real gift and a true inspiration. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, including MANY here among these Forums. It's a loss for all of us.
Very sad news. John and I had major interests in common and I enjoyed his posts here for years. He was a talented builder and an extremely knowledgeable collector. I will miss him. He is indeed a loss to us all.
Yes, I remember seeing his posts. RIP John. It is sad indeed.😟
God bless him. He posted over 1870 posts and last posted December 24th. So sad. R.I.P. John!
That's a shock. He sure loved creating models. RIP, John.
How terribly sad and shocking. John was a great contributor and friendly individual. Just a couple of weeks ago he emailed me about a trip he had taken to my home town Victoria, British Columbia, in a Jag XK 150 many years ago, including pics. Like others I enjoyed his many posts, his car knowledge (especially British marques) and positive attitude. This is very upsetting indeed. RIP John and may God bless you.
John was a regular for years at our local cars & coffee. He was always keen to bring one of his cars and held "court" from his lawn chair, never a lack of people stopping by for a chat. Here is John with his beloved 1965 Jaguar 3.8S, a car we had in common, along with our love for scale models.
John usually brought a boot full of 1/43 models of cars he anticipated showing up to our monthly gathering and/or his latest projects. Here is John (in tweed cap) behind his immaculate Morris Minor, boot open and deep in conversation on some related automotive topic or another. He was always interesting to have a conversation with and will be a missed fixture in our lives..
@jerry-liudahl ...thank you Jerry. John's work & dedication will never be forgotten. All of us, especially me, appreciated his skills & steadfast commitment to scale detailed accuracy and authenticity. Fortunately, I was able to compliment & comment on him and his projects numerous times throughout his years posting on these Forums. I (we ) will miss John very much.

Jerry, thanks for letting us know. I will miss John’s posts showing his great model building skills. Like me, he was also a 1/64 scale model railroader. My condolences to his friends and family.

So sad to hear of John's passing. Many years ago, I mentioned on the forum that the rear bumper on my Durham Classics 1938 Oldsmobile has broken in half. John contacted me and offered to make me a replacement free of charge. Very shortly thereafter, I received a home made bumper from John- a perfect duplicate of the original. John was indeed a passionate master builder. I will miss his photos of his creations. R.I.P. John.
Sad news. John will be missed.
