eat all your food just to keep others from getting a shot at it ?????........in OUR household it was always the "Pagan Babies" collection boxes that came out each year, courtesy of our local church.....and those were clearly labeled : coins only,no hot food accepted

Looking at that plateful would inspire anyone to repress the instinctive urge to shovel down whatever was put in front of them, in favour of helping the starving poor.

Mind you, the lucky recipients would probably say "Nah, I'd rather eat twigs and insects". (Or maybe those ARE twigs and insects. Hard to tell, really.)

At different times in our youths' people were "starving" in different parts of the world.  For me, it was China.  When I was made aware of this fact at the dinner table one night when liver and onions was the main course, I replied "Fine, sent it there".  I don't have to tell you what happened next...

Your parents put it in a box and sent it via UPS to the Red Cross in Beijing, right?

Bravo. Every little helps.

When I was young and still with my mother, I didn't dare say I didn't like something that was being served.  If I did, she would give me a double portion of it.  And if I didn't eat all of it, guess what was served for breakfast?  True story!  She was not a nice person.
