Just received a DM that I was really looking forward to. That is until it arrived, housekeeper grabbed it and brought inside. She called me to ask if I could come down. Paused my Zoom meeting and as soon as I hit the lower level, the scent hit me.
It was if it had been kept in the smokers lounge it's entire time. Had to take it out back to even open the exterior box. After that the pristine box it was in smelled beyond belief. As of now I have the model outside airing out and everything related to its delivery was placed in our exterior scent controlled cans.
As you can probably tell, I am not a smoker so this hit me hard. I'm sure by Friday, the smell will be neutralized and it will be allowed to play with its other 1/24 friends lol.

@modeldadeeee .... I don't smoke cigarettes but occasionally I'll have a good cigar or smoke a joint or two.... but, ah, I'm good. Trust me, I KNOW what reeeeekey cigarette smoke smells like! 😫 😫 🤢 🤢 🤮

The model will still need to be washed to some degree, or the stench will linger for some time. Especially if it is a convertible, and if it has open windows, good luck with cleaning the interior.

@gdh I have assigned that task to the housekeeper lol. It's almost bonus time here...

@modeldadeeee Ummmmm, you may want to reconsider, if the model has any fiddly bits and your housekeeper views the task as outside the scope of her responsibilities.

@gdh oh no let's just say I pay extremely well for things I want / need. She's gone as far as driven me to the airport during a last minute run.

As someone new to collecting our little treasures, we failed to think about this. You may have seen some sellers actually put in print that the model came from a non-smoking home because that is a HUGE selling factor. It has been for me since I am a lifelong non-smoker. I only once bought a car model that smelled like it was in a locked vault with a thousand smokers for 2 years.
Only one thing worked; a double-pronged attack. Most models can be washed. Now that depends on materials used on it. If there are fabric interiors, you cannot totally immerse the car in water. But all else can be washed with mild soap and water. That will only address the surface film. Secondly is an application of Ozium, in gel form. If a model that is otherwise perfect, this may work for you.

@perrone1 Good tips.... and yes, "smoke free" and occasionally "pet free" can be useful buzz words when collecting almost anything. 😉

Oh yeah, you're right Chris - pet-free too. Cigarette and pet odors seem to stay forever in a model. Super hard to get rid of/ This Ozium gel is the best I have found.
