We've taken the 'holiday' extremes to a different level, with non-gift-giving on holidays. If we see a need, for either of us, we just get what we want/need at that moment. We have enough 'stuff' in storage and on the property to remind us of how out of hand gift-giving-holidays can get. If you're kind to each other every day you don't need 'special' days.

WOW! You said it even better than I did. My princess and I have been married 52 years and together for 53+, we share everyday doing things we like to do together and when either of us has a "need" to buy something, we do, saying, "Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, Happy Anniversary", usually followed by a hug. Yesterday for Valentine's Day (a calendar holiday), we got up, shared one of those hugs, went to breakfast at our favorite little restaurant and then later in the day gave volunteer time at Second Stork, a non-profit organization that provides new born babies and their mothers with diapers, crocheted hats, and other baby needs to mothers (and families) that are in need. Afterwards, we grabbed some lunch at a quiet not so buys sandwich shop, came home and watched the Olympics on TV together for awhile. When our day was over, we gave thanks to each other for being blessed to share our lives together. That was a nice Valentine's Day.
