Living in the Northeast my entire life and I never had the need to use tire chains.

PIC - In California, they are a requirement by the CHP. Well, at least if you travel...

... to the mountains when there is snow. They have checkpoints established and won't allow you through unless chains have been mounted. Fortunately, there are usually enterprising young men set up at the checkpoints who will mount the chains for you for $40.

I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1949 to 1973, Positrac and snow tires was all I needed.

When I lived in Wyoming we never needed chains. A lot of the new cars, including my Chrsyler 300 and my daughter's Jeep, tell you in their manuals not to ever use chains. We never get snow here so it is no problem but it does make me wonder what people do in the snow belt with these new cars.
