The first speeding ticket in the USA was issued in 1899 when Jacob German, driving his Electrobat (yes, an all-electric car that was used as taxis in NYC), was caught driving a blistering 12 MPH. Click here

wasn't that about the same era when people told each other that these speeds would be lethal for the human body ?

@joop, perhaps. But, I think, by then, the trains were moving along a lot faster.

Not too long ago, in NYC, I received a speeding ticket via a speed camera. I was doing 41 MPH in a 30 MPH for about 10 seconds, if that. Any speed over 10 MPH above the limit will trigger the camera. Normally I keep my WAZE engaged which warns me of speed and redlight cameras, on that day I forgot to turn it on. Cost me $50.

Jacob was zooming along at nearly 12 mph ? What a maniac and risk-taking daredevil ! It is lucky, I guess, he was tracked by a NYPD bicycle officer, presumably doing more than 12 mph to courageously run him down.
