PIC: Ford GT sits on the pole at LeMans!

The weekend is shaping up to be an exciting one. It would be awesome to see another all-out Ford/Ferrari battle. Click here.

Re: Ford GT at Le Mans

Post-qualifying the Ford GTs and the Ferraris have been hit with weight and/or reduced turbo penalties for the race.

The GT class at Le Mans has a "Balance of Performance" set of rules which tries to equalise performance between the manufacturers (i.e. Ferrari, Ford, Porsche, Aston Martin and Corvette). It seems that Corvette (plus probably Porsche and Aston Martin) have been playing it fair and above board for most of the season and subsequently were off the pace in qualifying this week.

The adjustments that have now been implemented could make for a titanic 5 way battle for GT honours, possibly even pushing a GT car into the top 15 overall at the end of the race.

Thanks for the explanation, Mike. I've been following but not that closely.

This clears up some of what I read but didn't fully understand.

Well, it isn't a matter of Porsche and Corvette playing fair. The BOP or Balance of Performance...

... is a weird oddity in racing at Le mans. The race organizers, the ACO deemed the Fords and Ferraris to be too fast. The ACO's intention is to not allow superior performance cars to run away with the race. However, some cars have been accused of sandbagging too so that they can open up their performance DURING the race!

Racing at Le mans always has some drama!
