PIC .. LOL - Wheel Covers that was dubbed Checkerboard Spinners

These particular spinners are from a 56 Olds - cool in the day

Growing up in the fifties, I am aware of these aftermarket wheel covers. I just never heard them called checkerboards.

Back in the '50s, we always thought that those "checkerboards" (though we never heard them called that) were rip-offs of the Olds spinners, with the Olds Saturn planets removed from them and replaced with the squares. They were found at Western Auto, Pep Boys, and in J.C. Whitney catalogs. More popular in our area were the Dodge Lancer spinners from '57 and '58, although some guys did buy real Olds spinner 'caps and repaint the round section with the planets to match their cars.
