PIC: Sad day for this guy and his custom Mercury,
photo no longer available
Sad to see a wrecked ‘50 Merc. I had a ‘49 with Olds V8.

Dan, I had a 50 with a 371 J-2 out of a 58 Olds. The top on mine was not chopped but the hood, deck lid and door handles were shaved. The hood had 144 louvers and the grill was from a 54 Chevy with extra teeth.
Bob, that was the car to have back then. Did you have a DA?
Bob, I only had a 303 with 4bbl and duals but the torque increase was very strong.
That big 371 J-2 with triple carbs must have llit the tires up easily, especially in the rain.
Adapting an Olds engine into a Mercury was a snap compared to a Ford. With the Ford you had to modify the steering arms to clear the oil pan and switch the starter to the right side.
Battery location was the only problem in the Mercury if you wanted short cables. We cut a notch in the left outside air duct and welded in a battery box.
My top was not chopped, I preferred comfort and never did like the chopped look.

This is a write-off sadly, but it could be rebuilt if someone had the desire.
No DA Frank...flat top . I worked in a drug store and the owner was very conservative and wanted his employees looking a certain way. Since the job was paying for the car, I adhered to his rules besides he was a very nice man and good to work for.
Are you from Ohio?
No I'm from the St. Louis, Mo area.
