1970 Plymouth Superbird...

1970 Plymouth Superbird 3

From the www:

The 1970 Plymouth Superbird is an iconic, limited-production muscle car renowned for its radical aerodynamic design, including a massive rear wing and elongated nose cone, which was explicitly engineered for NASCAR racing dominance. It is a highly sought-after collector's item today.

Key Features and Specifications
  • Design: The Superbird was a heavily modified version of the Plymouth Road Runner, with body modifications including an 18-inch extended nose cone and a 24-inch tall rear wing, both of which were wind-tunnel tested to improve stability and downforce at high speeds. It also featured pop-up headlights and, staying true to its roots, a horn that mimicked the Road Runner cartoon character's "beep-beep" sound.
  • Production: Only produced for the 1970 model year to meet NASCAR homologation rules (which required building one car for every two dealerships), with a total of approximately 1,935 units built for public sale.
  • Racing Heritage: The car was designed specifically to lure legendary driver Richard Petty back to Plymouth's NASCAR team from Ford, which it successfully did. Superbirds and Dodge Charger Daytonas won 33 of the 48 races they entered in the 1970 season before NASCAR rules changes effectively outlawed the "aero cars" for the 1971 season.

Engine Options
The 1970 Plymouth Superbird was available with three powerful V8 engine options:

Engine Type  Horsepower Torque (lb-ft) Production Numbers
440 Super Commando (4-barrel) 375 hp 480 lb-ft 1,084 units
440 Six-Barrel (3x2-barrel) 390 hp 490 lb-ft 716 units
426 HEMI (2x4-barrel) 425 hp 490 lb-ft 135 units

Collectibility and Value
Due to its unique styling, extreme rarity, and significant racing history, the 1970 Plymouth Superbird is one of the most valuable and sought-after muscle cars among collectors today.
  • Average Price: The average sale price for a Superbird in good condition can range from approximately $235,000 to over $400,000, depending heavily on the engine, originality, condition, and mileage.
  • HEMI Premium: Hemi-powered examples are exceptionally rare and valuable, with average selling prices of over $500,000 and some top-tier examples fetching much higher prices at auction.
The Superbird can often be found for sale through classic car marketplaces and auction houses, such as Hemmings, Classics on Autotrader.

Obviously this car and the Dodge Daytona were only manufactured to have the wing design accepted for competition by NASCAR.....at least for a while...lol.

As teenagers we thought they were outlandish and used to laugh at them cruising on the street.....little did we know!  Now I think they are cool, simply for their part of automotive history, but I have to say that just based on looks I wouldn't want one in my garage.

@jack-dodds I never seen any on the street...seen only one and that was at a car show. Agree about not wanting one.

I've only seen them at car museums. One in nearby Pigeon Forge has two of them. Great reading - THANKS John!

I’ve always preferred the Daytona for it’s overall cleaner look.

Saw quite a few back in the day.  A gentleman from New Fairfield Conn back in the day made a beautiful purple Daytona out of a '69 Plymouth convertible making it 1 of 0. I even got to ride in it.

I love these winged warriors. They are intimidating looking to say the least. I guess my fascination with them as an 8 year old back then still carries on today. And they look better than this. JMHO though. 😊

They may be rare but I never had the desire to own one. Two friends locally own several which is the only time I've seen them and that was at car shows.

I think with what these are worth, plus all the careless, distracted drivers on the road today, makes it scary or nerve-wracking to get your classic muscle car out and drive them. For me, I'd want to drive it, not just make it a trailer queen.😁

@geno Each of us to our own Geno....personally I love the look of this one much more than the Superbird or Daytona.  This one I would be happy to have in my garage.  Lol.

...a girl I went to high school with had two Superbirds  in the garage - her Dad's pride & joy.     They never did much for me, but I'm in the minority I suppose.   I've never seen a Torino King Cobra.
