Cleaner, more visually striking - Oldsmobile.
DeSoto. One of my 1950s favorites. Love its looks.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
DeSoto for me as well.
This is a tough one for me, as I like both for '56. But OLDSMOBILE wins!

DeSoto please. The only Olds I like of the '50's is the '57.
Two outstanding cars to choose from John. The break line on the Ninety Eight Olds always appealed to me whereas the Eighty Eight did not. By the smallest of margins the Oldsmobile gets my vote.
DeSoto, and not even close, for me.
Each is a beautiful 1950's American automobile at their best ! It would great to have a replica (or drive around in a real one) of these cars. 1955 was a hard year to top but each did a good job in these 1956 editions.
DeSoto styling, trim and color separation (and yes George, even its dashboard...lol) give it the easy nod. Not a big fan of this year Olds grille, much prefer the shoulder years.
I'm going with the DeSoto. The Olds is nice, but to me, the grille makes it look like a bottom feeder.

The luxurious Oldsmobile for me but the DeSoto is nice too.
Gents, thanks for your responses.
