I’m a tourist too. I retired in 1995 relatively young and travelled a few months each year, managing to see about 90 countries before Covid, much less so since. Regarding US Customs wearing all that bling, could have got expensive. Teaching in Doha would have been interesting.

@abaucom LOL. We use what we have to get by, don't we? My attire on the day of my 'Customs' encounter was full on GQ, from the Cole Haans to the Burberry raincoat, and I have a sense that helped. A mentor told me years ago when meeting with an official, or a banker, one should 'put on your best bib and tucker.' In your case, it was blinding the official with a bit of bling. Well, perhaps there was more than a 'bit' of bling involved.
