Back then any car that reached 101,000 miles was respected, but not worth much. And that is why most people sold their car when it hit 98,000 miles. It was a psychological phenomenon.
These days a car with 100,000 miles on can still command a five figure price which doesn't start to decline for another 50K miles or so. And a car with over 250,000 miles on it still has value.
