1972, you are 25 years old and you just came into some money and decided to buy a new [American] car for your everyday uses, what would be your top three choices in the order of the most desired.
My picks:
Dodge Monaco
Ford F100
Chevy
I don't really care for any cars until the '77 Trans Am, that Ved grill.
@perrone1 Tony, the orange color of the Vette was my favorite for that car back in the day.
The '72 Pontiac Grand Prix seems to be a popular choice....it was #4 on my list, tied with the Mercury Cougar XR7 (which I once owned).

Yes sir - Ontario Orange Firemist. There was also a War Bonnet Yellow Firemist and Steel Cities Grey Firemist for '72. We ALSO had two Cougar XR-7's loved them! the last one was a '91 I believe, in a turquoise metallic with saddle interior.
@perrone1 The '72 Vette was my favorite year of that body design. I loved the tail end design along with that of the the grill insert. I was shocked the following year when they changed to the very different front treatment; it looked "stuck on" by comparison and that beautiful bumper surround was gone! Even worse in '74 when they stuck on the comparatively bulbous looking tail end piece that had the split in the middle and lost those gorgeous bumpers.
Yep. The 72 was the last full bumpered car. The 73 looked odd with the rear steel bumper and plastic front end.

I agree....very odd indeed.
@perrone1 I agree with you. The 73 looked stupid to me as if they couldn't make up their mind which way to go, chrome or no chrome.
For 72, I pick the Torino, the Camaro, and the Monte Carlo.
