Australia identifies non-seatbelt-wearing drivers primarily through AI-powered, high-definition cameras that capture images of passing vehicles, operating day and night in most states. These systems automatically detect if seatbelts are missing or incorrectly worn by drivers and passengers, with footage verified by human personnel before issuing fines.
Key Identification Methods:
- Seatbelt Detection Cameras: Existing mobile phone detection cameras were upgraded to also identify seatbelt offenses.
- AI and Verification: Artificial intelligence software automatically reviews images to detect potential offenses, which are then verified by trained personnel to ensure accuracy.
- Scope: Cameras detect offenses for drivers, front-seat passengers, and, in some cases, rear-seat passengers, including cases where seatbelts are worn under the arm.
- Locations: These cameras are often placed at sites with high traffic volumes and histories of crashes related to non-compliance.
- Police Enforcement: Traditional, in-person traffic stops by police also account for seatbelt violation enforcement.
As of late 2024 and throughout 2025, these cameras have been deployed across most Australian states and territories (excluding NT and SA) to enforce compliance

Seat belts are not mandatory for people over 18 in the state of New Hampshire.
Does this mean if you are driving your '50's classic car you have to have over the shoulder restraints or get a fine in the places with the cameras? What if the car only came with lap belts? Does this mean you can not drive older cars in these states?
