Did you hand the buggy whip to the examiner? When I first took my driver's test, we had to display hand signals for the examiner. But most cars had turb signals by then. But most drivers did not use them. Me included. Now - I use them even if no one is within a mile of my car - habit.
I noticed that on the rare occasion when the turn signal stalk is actually activated, it transitions into a lane-clearing device.

Ha! Nope. I was like John Wayne in True Grit. I put the reins in my teeth, buggy whip to control ol' Millie the Mule in my right hand and displayed my hand signals with my left.
Then, without the examiner knowing, I said, under my breath, "Fill your hands you SOB's". To this day I have no idea who I was talking to. LOL!
"Many folks behind the wheel drive like NASCAR!"
I agree, but I'd change it to Asscar.💯
My hand signal story:
I have a twin sister and back in '71 when were 16 my mother took both of us to the DMV to get our drivers licenses. We both passed the written test with no problem. When it was time for the driver test, she went first and I waited inside the DMV. After a few minutes she came inside and said, "He wants you". Wow, that was fast I thought. So, I went outside, got in the car, took the test, and passed with a 96. I found out later that when she got into the car and buckled her seat belt the first thing the instructor asked her to do was demonstrate the driver hand signals. Well apparently, she had no trouble with a left turn signal, but when it came to the right, she was having trouble. After a few attempts, each met with a "No, try again" she asked him "Does it have something to do with your wrist?" He told her "Go home, study, and come back another day. Go get your brother". We still laugh about to this day.
@marty-johnson It would seem that way Marty. No need to look just as long as you turned the signal on.
Oh, this is a real pet peeve of mine. Use your #%$@ing turn signals!
