When I first took my driver's test, we had to display hand signals for the examiner. But most cars had turb signals by then. But most drivers did not use them. Me included. Now - I use them even if no one is within a mile of my car - habit.

@perrone1 I also had to use hand signals for my road test way back when. I always use directional signals and curse out those who don't.

Oh yeah John; so do I. I cuss up a storm at these driver's who abruptly make turns, with no signals, especially in front of me. I usually have my windows up so that only I can hear my loud yelling.  Shirl says that I can cuss for an hour and not repeat the same cuss words twice! I'm lucky to have someone to appreciate my true talents huh?

@perrone1 Tony and John B., Lori would attest to the fact that we must all be related. Nothing brings out a good cussing from me is the non ability of some drivers who evidently don't know how to use turn signals or refuse to do so. As to hand signals, that is an art form that only we prehistoric individuals understand.

@perrone1 Tony, I use mine all the time as well and had to go through that drivers test using the hand signals as well.  I took my test in the middle of winter in NY and had to drive the car with the window open and the heat blaring to keep the examiner happy.  Passed first time though.  I get on to my kids all the time about not using their blinkers even though I harped on it when they were learning.  But yet they get all annoyed when someone does it to them.  One day they will learn.

No fair combining cuss words Geno! Made-up is ok so long as it sounds crude or dirty. HA! (You know - something like, "You dumb Flagstaff, where'd you learn to drive - Pep Boys?)

...as I've noted before (of course you'll all remember - LoL! )  I'm notorious for NOT using turn signals, unless in heavy traffic.    For any with LKA (lane keep assist ) you know that can be an issue, so I just turn it off.  😀 😀

Both my car and truck have blind spot monitoring.  If you use the turn signals when changing lanes, you'll hear an audible warning that a vehicle is in your blind spot.  I always use my turn signals for this reason.

Drivers NOT using turn signals is my biggest driving frustration.  It boggles my mind that something that takes absolutely ZERO effort to do, is such a major misuse of turn signals.  And then there are the monkeys who indicate a right or left turn via signal, and then turn the opposite direction with any thought for the people behind or near them.  IDIOTS!  And yes, I personally use my turn signals 100% of the time, every time!  It's takes no effort of my pinky finger to indicate my intention to turn or change lanes.

One of my friends is just the opposite of me, as he NEVER uses his turn signals and he is constantly changing lanes too.  I've called him on it many times, and he laughs it off replying, the HE knows what he's doing while driving!  When I tell him that the turn signals are not for him, but rather the drivers around him, he seems clueless and non-caring.  I refuse to ride with him!

And while we're waging our frustrations on the lack of using turn signals, let me just share that my second most irritating thing other drives do is.  Driving up to our rear bumpers and riding it without any thought that if "I stop", they're going to be in my backseat!  When I took drivers training back in 1967, the very FIRST THING the instructor told me was, "For every 10 miles of speed, you should be 1 car length behind the car in front of you".  And this too, is mind boggling to me that a guy who is doing doing 60 or 70 miles per hour, will one car length (or less) behind the car in front of them doesn't get this!!!

THESE FOOLS ARE REALY IDIOTS!!!  Seriously, I'd like walk up to their cars when they stop, a give them a good punch in the nose and walk away!

1 - "It boggles my mind that something that takes absolutely ZERO effort."

2 - "For every 10 miles of speed, you should be 1 car length behind the car in front of you."

1 - Correction:  "Zero effort"  is doing nothing.   I use turn signals only when necessary; I doubt you'd want to drive with me George.

2 - Like you, tailgaters also infuriate me - I have road rage stories you wouldn't believe - but that golden rule went out the window long ago.   Many folks behind the wheel drive like NASCAR!

I meant "zero effort" in the sense that it take "no effort whatsoever to click the turn signal up or down".  As for your comment, "I use turn signals only when necessary", I can only say that they ARE NECESSARY anytime a driver is going to go right or left at a corner or in changing lanes.  And if they are not used in ALL of those situations, then the driver SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING!  I'm very firm on this!  Drivers who can't have respect for their fellow drivers are a menace to the road and our lives!!!
