The neighbor's '68 Opel Kadett.

In 1958 I bought my first car, a stick 1952 Plymouth Cranbrook Convertible,
Love that car, wish I still had it.
A 1949 Studebaker Land Cruiser? 4 dr sedan....drove it from a guys house back to the gas station c1956 I was 10. My dad let me drive the family 1952 Buick Dynaflow down a rural road by our home about the same time...it was great!
1969 Fiat 124 Spider. Bought it then learned to drive it.
I loved my 124 Spider. I'm in the market for another 60s or 70s European roadsters.
The first manual, and the one I learned on, was an old International pickup truck on a farm, driving through a cornfield. I had a hard time keeping my foot steady on the gas and literally lurched over the furrows. Then there was the problem of learning to push in the clutch when coming to a stop. I was 12 years old.
The first automatic I drove was a '52 Chevy Powerglide. I didn't like it.
All manuals when I started out. First was my Dad's Triumph Herald, then..
the first auto was a Ford Cortina station wagon that belonged to a rep who called at the school I was teaching in. I mentioned the car and he threw me the keys as he was trying to sell some educational stuff to the headteacher. All the kids had gone home and the place was quiet. I set sail in the Ford and found it just a bit quicker than my Citroen 2CV. Belting down the long straight that went past the back of the school I decided to change up into top gear so stamped my foot on the clutch, which of course was the footbrake. I found that Ford Cortinas skid in a straight line for a long way - but the tyres tend to leave marks on the road.
Chastened by my experience I drove slowly back to the school The headteacher had purchased a load of stuff, the rep was happy, and didn't look at his tyres before he left.
Beetle, and I'm surprised not to see it on this list before me.
Retired in Dunedin, Florida.
Great story John !!
Dodge Omni was the first I drove, 5.0 Mustang LX first I owned.
My brother's 1965 Volkswagen Beetle. Virtually all of my personal cars have been stick shifts.
1978 (?) Opel Ascona 1.9 SR no driving licence at that moment.
But I actually did not eally like the car.
My second was a 1979 Chevy Malibu and I loved it....
Again, I still had no driving licence.
I used to hang around a foreign car repair shop so there were a lot of em and I moved cars there. But my biggest memory was driving a Renault Dauphine to the airport to get a customer. No instructor, just had to wing it. And the customer owned that Renault. Surprise!?!
PIX.The first car......
I drove and learned to drive in, was a 1962 Vauxhall Velox PAX with a three on the tree gear shift.
The first vehicle I drove was a 1956 Nuffield Farm Tractor.
