Built in 1962, this AC body Cobra roadster got a specially built Ford 260 Windsor V8 with solid lifter cam, high rise aluminum intake manifold with a 4 bbl Holley carburetor and 10:1 compression ratio. Called the XHP-260-1 it produced 260 HP. After spending much time working the bugs out of this roadster, by 1963 Carroll Shelby was ready to compete. He hired young Dave McDonald who had watched this car race for an hour at Riverside and saw its potential. He hooked up with Ken Miles for a serious go at the 1963 Riverside event where Cobra got its first win. They were much faster than the Corvettes that Ken Miles made a pit stop just to have a drink and immediately caught u and passed the Corvettes. McDonald took the car out the following day and won another race! There was no doubt that the AC Cobra would have a bright future.
Model by Exoto:
Terrific pics! A legend was born, 1:1 and in scale. Exoto's Cobras remain the best 1/18 example available. 😎
@chris The best, and until Spark came out with the 1963 Le Mans model, the only model maker to make any of the small block (260 & 289) cars. Everybody and his uncle made models of the big block 427 cars - most not very well done. With Exoto pretty much leaving the playing field and my attempts to try to convert the cheap 427 cars into the FIA spec cars not as successful as I wanted, I had to break down and get three of the most significant FIA spec cars in 1:12 scale
If by chance anybody does actually get around to making these cars in 1:18 - not likely - I'll be first in line.
Wasn’t Exotos tagline something like “We sweat the details?”

@100ford2003 ...if it wasn't, it sure could have been. 🤨
"I mentioned my dislike of the red wires."
Funny you mention this.... years ago, I too hated painted wires but the older I get the more I can tolerate them.
I only like the unpainted wheels. Just my taste.

@chris That was good old Tony Keusseyan who adopted Tony Perrone after I gave him a bad review on his Porsche 959 for modeling the large intakes on the rear fenders as a dimple. He fired back that due to the complex curves, the dies couldn't allow for an opening. I answered with a pic of my $15 diecast Bburago 959 that was cast with open intakes. That was the last review sample I ever got from him. Aaaah... those were the days. LOL
@rich-sufficool Those indeed were the days! I remember going back and forth many times with Tony - he still owes me two cars to say nothing of my seven or eight pre-orders that I put in to "avoid disappointment" - another famous Exoto tag line. Flaws aside Exoto made some epic models and even though I have only bought one in the last eleven years they still make up 27% of my collection
@rich-sufficool HA! What a great stories Rich, Frank..... and yeah, "business politics!" 🤨 🤨
