"I mentioned my dislike of the red wires."

Funny you mention this....      years ago, I too hated painted wires but the older I get the more I can tolerate them.

Oh yeah, absolutely - me too  -  to a degree. It depends on the car, the wire wheels and the color. On some they look better than silver or chromed. But by and large I like unpainted wires.

@chris That was  good old Tony Keusseyan who adopted Tony Perrone after I gave him a bad review on his Porsche 959 for modeling the large intakes on the rear fenders as a dimple. He fired back that due to the complex curves, the dies couldn't allow for an opening. I answered with a pic of my $15 diecast Bburago 959 that was cast with open intakes. That was the last review sample I ever got from him. Aaaah... those were the days. LOL

Tony was a larger than life character who I loved working with. So were a couple of family members who worked at Exoto. I enjoyed interacting with them all and had a reverence for their expertise in various areas. It was a nice relationship that took daily nurturing!

@perrone1 I hated the red wires on this Mexican PanAmerican Road race '54 Vette.... until I replicated the car in 1/64 scale.    They grew on me.......    😉

@chris I made that Von Esser Vette using a '53 Franklin Mint 1/24 and kit bashed a Revell plastic kit and made up parts like exhaust extensions and the mesh 'grill' and sent it to Danbury Mint as a prototype. It was fun researching it. I got some cool stories from Von Esser's niece who worked at his shop after school.

@chris

That Studebaker looks very nicely detailed, did you create the brake drum?

@rich-sufficool ...for me, this little 1/64 Vette was a "snowball kind of thing...."

I wanted additional period-correct racers to compliment my '54 Lincoln Pan-American Mexican Road Race car.   When I saw photos Von Esser's Vette I figured I could replicate it knowing Hot Wheels Elite - true 1/64 scale  made a nice, but somewhat rare, stock white/red '53 Vette.    Pirated wheels & details from other 1/64 models combined with printed decals resulted in a decent 1/64 Von Esser Vette.    I grew to really like this little thing.

I ASSUME you heard some pretty cool & hair-raising  stories from his niece.    😎 😎

@100ford2003 I painted & detailed it but did NOT make it.    I bought a set that was designed & 3-D printed by someone else.

What I found interesting was the number of celebs that hung at at his speed shop. Of course she was smitten by Steve McQueen, but for me, it was Dave Garroway who had the first morning show on TV. I always saw him as kind of a nerd when he was actually a real gearhead whose favorite ride was his 1938 Jaguar SS which he raced. From what I've read, He did promotional work for the early Corvettes. All I remember about him as a kid, was his regular celeb guests and his chimpanzee named J Fred Muggs. LOL Here he is at the 1950 Bridgehampton sports car race:
