@jack-dodds Thanks for the heads-up: have just watched my first episode of Heartbeat and definitely, the blob on the moor is a case for the constabulary's boys in blue!  For a sharper, more risque view of British 1950's culture, Lipstick On Your Collar is well worth checking out.......

Thanks, John ! I guess I guess I am more partial to regular 1964 Cadillacs than Jada's nevertheless nicely-done "dub" style. Hence, the rather uncomplicated makeover.

The scariest movie is X-The Unknown: a British Hammer horror that follows a nuclearesque blob, (a precursor to The Blob) " X ", as it roams the English countryside, feeding upon energy and terrorising human-kind. Very 1956!

Another couple of sci-fi British features I think are quite good are the 1936 "Shape of Things to Come" and much later, "Quartermass and the Pit".

Thanks, Charles. In a sidenote, "Shapes of Things" by the 1966 rock group the Yardbirds, with the late Jeff Beck on guitar, in a sense, kind of references this British movie from 30 years before by William Cameron Menzies and from the H.G. Wells novel.

I shall give a listen to your Yardbirds recording too. The British art-school / rock mindset does like passed reference points, so this makes a lot of sense.  Again, thanks for the homework - I do like to find out new stuff.

I think you would enjoy both of them, Charles. Raymond Massey is one of the stars of "Shape of Things to Come" and it also introduces the idea/organization of "Wings Over the World". A certain rock group which included Paul McCartney and his wife Linda used that idea and term from the 1936 movie. The final statements/soliloquy from Massey as he and the leader watch the spacecraft with his son and the leader's daughter head off into the stars at the end is a classic.

@mikedetorrice Hi Mike I've been working hard and must hit the sack, but have briefly googled  'Things To Come'  and it looks amazing - thank-you very much. I'm very bad as I have had the DVD for Metropolis for at least 15 years and its still in its wrapper, but this is one I must at least get the DVD of.  Images reflect 1930's deco classicism with some Flash Gordon futurism to speed things along - a definite must.

The Art Deco ambiance in those later scenes is really cool ! Very impressive set design and special effects miniatures in the later stages of this movie. And the "Quatermass and the Pit" movie is scary ! The London Underground subway system indeed ..............
