Excuse me where I said twice in the video Smokey and the Bear instead of Smokey and the Bandit, this trailer is actually a BJ and the Bear trailer and looking at the trailer I said Smokey and the Bear twice instead of Smokey and the Bandit.
This video shows the inside of the trailer, the side door and steps it comes with, shows the front of the trailer and the underside of the trailer is shown. This should answer some questions Chris had on these trailers regarding the underside and the air hose and electric hook up connection box on the front of the trailer.
Yes, very helpful... thanks John!
I unwittingly purchased my 1/18 Road Kings KW, not knowing ANYTHING about its BJ & the Bear reference. I never watched the show but apparently the actual TV truck & trailer was left rotting in a field but has since been recovered & restored.
Yes indeed, that trailer is well constructed. All those side-rivets blow me away (I cheated when I had to make some! ) I'm glad to see hook-ups for line sets and I think I just might have to copy their clever "adjustable pin" engineering. That "wood" trailer floor is almost too nice as those tend to get chewed up after years of service.
I do, however, take issue with the entire rear configuration. That trailer floor should be no higher than the bottom edge of the doors, the rear bumper & taillight assembly should protrude outward (not inward as shown ) so that it can act as a "stop" when in contact with a loading dock's opening.
Lastly, when opened and folded back, both rear door hinges should be flush with the trailer sides, they should not stick out (as shown ). They would be crushed instantly when that trailer backed into a loading dock.
I suspect their "beefy" trailer frame engineering is why the trailer floor had to be raised, but of course without that "beefy" frame the entire assembly would probably collapse. Therefore, like practically every model.....there are trade-offs.
Forgive me, I didn't intend to become pedantic, but I once considered (and still do ) building my own 1/18 box-trailer and possibly a tanker.... so, auh, ANY ideas/pics/suggestions are like gold!
@chris You won't like the Road Kings trailers then, the rear doors only open straight out, they do not wrap around the trailer body at all, looking closer at the photos it looks like the doors are made of plastic, I am betting the entire trailer is made of plastic from looking at enlarged photos. There is also no box on the front for airline and electric hook ups.
@john3976 RIGHT! As I mentioned, these RK all plastic trailers are NO WHERE NEAR up to par with their semi trucks...and your MNTrailers are BETTER than RK semi trucks.
Obviously, RK wants to cash in (making money IS the name of the game, after all ) on sales of ALL their semis, foreign & domestic, hence the hybrid styling.
The ONLY reason why I like these RK trailers is because it now gives ME a starting point, should I decide to replicate/fabricate a 1/18 trailer one day. That's why I love your videos so much..... I can pirate ideas from "those guys in Romania" too! 😏 😏 😏
