For the 1967 Bond film, director Lewis Gilbert wanted another flashy car to tool the streets of Tokyo. He had decided on the newly introduced Camaro, but his friend, a driver for Toyota convinced him to use a more exotic (to Western eyes) Toyota 2000GT. It was a real coup in 'product placement'. The problem. of course, was that, at 6'2", Sean Connery's head was well above the windscreen. So, in two weeks, they created 2 topless cars with fake tonneau covers for the film. The result may have given Bond the headroom but didn't solve the room needed for his lower extremities, so, for the film, it was only driven by Bond girl "Aki" (Akiko Wakabayashi). As much as I just love this car, at 6'3", I'd be in worse shape.
A local dealer, who specializes in high end exotic sports cars, had a very rare left hand drive coupe on his floor a few years ago. He invited me to sit in the car and at 6'2" I thought I might have to buy the car as it appeared that the car and I had become permanently attached. Nice pictures Rich.
1. what is that opening on the left front fender ahead of the door in the 7th photo ?? 2. Who made this 1/18 model.
@randtheman The blue ringed component is the air filter and to the right is the windshield washer reservoir. The door on the right fender is for battery access. Model is by AUTOart.

You'll notice that that little door opens on Rich's car, but doesn't on mine. AutoArt (AA) has done multiple releases of the 2000GT. Mine is the very old, original release with the 007 Box & also has the correct Japanese license plate. Rich's looks to be a later release without the 007 stuff.
AA has also done multiple releases of their Coupes. The new releases, in fact, are fully opening composite, instead of the diecast of the original models.
That's a beautiful model!

what a ddg Toyota !!!
@gavin I think my model was the second Bond car without the faux electronics behind the seat. I'm amazed what a job they did retro-fitting those fender doors to the tooling with such perfect panel gaps and hinging.
@rich-sufficool might be, Rich...hard to keep track of all the re-releases. Excellent model (the Coupes, too), regardless of which one you end up with.
@gavin I like the race car. I have one of Shelby's SCCA cars in 1/43.
