I missed out on the VW's because at the time I was only concentrating on American cars.  In those days I usually had a one, two, or more cars on order all the time, and the VW's weren't on the radar.  In hindsight, I regret that decision, but it was the best decision at the time for me.

As a side story, as a kid I always liked the VW's and I actually considered buying one for my very first car after I got my drivers license in 1967.  But the white '59 Chevy Impala Hardtop came along at a good price and I bought it.  I've never regretted that decision, but I did like the "Bugs".

Back in the late 70s, I bought an early beetle from my cousin who had joined the Marines. I paid him $200. Me and my new (now ex) wife and I drove the wheels off of it! I decide to finish college, so I sold it for $400 and bought a used Honda 360 Scrambler. It was about 15 miles from our rental house to campus, but I could park right outside my class buildings which gave me a few extra hours of shut-eye each morning.

@john-shamblin, LOL, which is the fonder memory?  The Beetle or the ex-wife?  From your description above, sounds like you not only made money on the Beetle, but with driving the "wheels off of it", you got more from it.  Smile

Well, I had good times and bad times with both, and both were fun to drive (if you catch my drift)
