My 2 cents
Noticed all the to do over the Vettes and the Mints.
First: There was nothing on David Hosea's numbers list for me. I am mainly a Pre WWII type collector.
Second: David accurately made the point that a large number of Vettes were by others.
But I think David failed to take his analysis further in that there are a large number of retreads in the remainder of his list.
1950 GMC X Mas truck which is a hand-me-down from a Red GMC and a 2000 X Mas Truck
1966 Shelby 4 versions (8 total w/independents)
1959 Cadillac El Dorado - 3
1956 Chevy Nomad - 3
1946 Chevy Suburban - 4
etc.
Bottom line on David's list - How many images are truly brand new never produced before.
I am sure Mints are making money on the models they sell to the independents?
The point on the Vettes paying some of the development costs for those other cars is not a stong point. Again how many of the models on David's list are brand new never produced before and therefore involve development cost 0 - 3 - 6 - 10 ???? Every reissue, not just the Vettes, are paying for development costs of very few new images.
I think somebody must be making money.

umdledhe did not take another
The only 'Vette I wanted to purchase from DM, recently, was the " Pro Touring"
and, they done took that away, without much fan-fare....don't want, now, to pay the used car piper...no wonder I feel paranoid!!!LOL..I thought it would be my last, and, would fit in nicely with that D4C offering I'm in line to get.
Too, numbers can be used any way a computer wants to use them, or, anyone else. How many releases of each of the six 'Vette C-styles have been made? Way more than most similar body styles...eg., the early '50's Chevies, not to mention the Mopars that haven't hardly been touched.
Rather than being " peeved " about the multiple 'Vette offerings., I'm " amazed " that the thing can be milked so many times!! If there are so many sports car lovers, you'd think someone ( of our big three producers) would at least try a mint Ferrari, Porsche, or, two...LOL
Well said Richard
And a good lesson in macroeconomics and put in a manner that all should be able to understand. And, of course, as you point out, there is very little that is truly "new" out there. Its time for the mints to reinvest some of their profits and start giving us a better selection of truly "new" models. They have already made plenty from the old ones.
Richard, I too want some more Pre-War but as I sell Diecast to the hobby market
I see a dramatic "Fall Off" in sales at the register on those editions. Unfortunatly what sells to the vast cross section of America or for probably anyother country/area is what People are familiar with. That being said all but a very few dedicated individuals have been exposed to those cars. They were not even here when those marks/brands were in their Glory Days. You as I are somewhat more into cars thus we appreciate a wider range/scope of years. My own collection is arranged by year and when showing or reviewing it with friends they gravitate to the things they know, especially Vettes even though they may not ever have owned one.
My take on the re-Treads is: Please notice they are all from The Franklin Mint who is trying to get things back under control and develop funds to give us something truly New. They did in the past so maybe their future will see some of those oldies we want. They have the 2006 Z06 (dare I say Corvette)is a fine example but was chosen as it was the closest thing to a "sure bet", The 1970 El Camino & 70 Challenger(s) all new tools this year. The Danbury Mint has done a fine job this year and they gave us a couple of pre-war items noting even their caution. I made the statements only to try to explain to people the manufacturers will only make things that SELL & MAKE PROFITS! The Danbury Mint made some very nice 1/12th but based upon the comments of this BB they got a lot of them back from overly picky collectors. I never had to return any of the 4 that I purchased as all were very good to perfect, maybe I was Lucky but I think not! Yes $500 a pop is expensive and should be done right but perfection well? It's too bad some can ruin it for others. I respect everyones desire to have more Variety but the cry is for cars that really had no Glory Days they were the Daily Drivers, see more proof of familiarity. I don't & would never criticize their right to voice their opinion, muzzle their desires, but when I miss state facts and see my mistake(s) I am big enough to correct and make the ammends necessary. Not continue the Blow Hard attitude toward anything I don't like. I beleive If you want to Criticize then before you do I suggest You Walk a Mile in that Mans Shoes before your Pearls of Wisdom are heard. None of these people are manufacturers, nor am I, of our fine treasures so have no real knowledge of what the manufacturer has to do to get the car to market. We also have no Idea how much money he put up front on the hope we would buy. Some of the tooling costs can go well above two hundred thousand on complex models. Everyone complains now over the price increases so the Mints are pressed ( keep costs down, lower prices so more will buy, Sales) as they do listen and analyse what sells.
What point is it that you think the Mints have made enough David?
Near as I can tell this is a free country no one made you contribute your money to their cause. I Thank You for your service to our country too! While you were doing it you were paid and did they ask you to contribute what ever you had left or were putting into savings as they gave you too much? I know the Service is not known for "High Pay" but I don't think Uncle came back to you to give back as you had enough. I had a Manager ask me "What do you need with more money, after all your wife works?" well I resigned over that because frankly if I was Rich I would have to work for him for Free? Hardly! How Blind he was. I was dirt Poor at the time, really needed the job too, but I made it somewhere else. Our country is made up of Freedom of Choice for one and all that's why you served and gave to others the right to decide what was important to them. Now you seem to want to dictate what they make and how much they can earn, Why do you think it is your descission? My suggestion is vote with your dollar! Don't buy till they make what you want, your choice.
David H, you get a standing ovation! Very well said!
I understand
However if I were to go to a car show and had my choice of looking at a line of Corvettes or these:
I think that the images of the 30's would luck good in the 1/24 world right next to that 1/24 2006 Vette even if todays collector my have not seen them face-to-face.

Thank You Marlowe I want all of us to be happy in our hobby and as such we need to be understanding of the manufacturers position.
Richard, I would Kill for that #3 Car I have wanted that one seems FOREVER.
Frankly any Bugatti would be welcome here. I have a couple and of course the new ones in 1/43rd scale too! That's what I mean about the Glory Years vs the Familiarity Issue. Anytime you're near you are sure welcome, we work on the theroy I'll get you the first beer or coffee so you know where to re-fill it, come on in!
Beautiful automobiles...... The 50's & 60's 'muscles' are cars.....
These are REAL AUTOMOBILES...... Thanks.... ๐
Part of the problem is that Familiarity helps the sales of those models.
I have a few Bugattis as I said before but when I see the pictures of this post then I realize there are a lot of model designations I do not recognise. In turn when spending upwards of $200.00 per model I do want to know exactly what car I'm buying, yes I can learn but I do not have that familiarity on my side. Most people when you talk about a Bugatti will say, What Car? I keep my Bugattis all together as I do the Fords or GM's, Chryslers Benz'es, Porsche's etc., so one can trace the linage from year/model to model. Anytime you want more room I'll find a place to house what you send over. "Visitation Rights" would apply, with "Security" of course.
