Great photos John, but another skirt issue!!

HA! I remember finding those skirts to be half-hearted. The car had the 'standard' 1955 GM squared off 'look' to the rear wheel well opening. But the inclusion of those skirts gave it a teardrop effect that Chevy later took on in 1956. The '55's skirts on this Olds took some getting used to. 😉

Gee go figure....Until now I never heard of anyone taking issue with the '55 Olds skirts......

Too much birthday celebrating???...lol. BTW, the more obvious to me would be the '56 Olds having the rear teardrop wheel opening.

Nice pics! Looks like those tires could use some ArmorAll, though.

it was probably done to keep consistant with the "flow" of the front wheel opening!

To be honest I NEVER noticed this and I own this model. THis model is extra special because my late Dad whom snickered at the cost of these models bought this for me about a year or two before he passed away. Its definitely a memorable "keepsake" now!!

I'll never understand why DM did an '88' instead of a '98'.

Yep, I believe they have been cleaned up since then.

The mints were damned if they did and damned if they didn't.

I remember thinking for much of the early 1990's how nice it would have been if DM would have done a 55, 56, or 57 Oldsmobile. And then when they did the 55, I was so excited! I didn't quickly ask, "Why the 88 series rather than the 98?" I was just happy that they were doing first an Oldsmobile, and then it was a 55. But I would have been just as happy had it been any other model year as well.

One thing has been a constant on this Forum since I hooked up here about 18 years ago, and that's no matter what the mints gave us, there have always been many who quickly not only question why it was "this car and not that car", and then also nit-pic most every cotton-pickin' detail of the car when it's issued.

Now don't read what I just said wrong! I totally understand that we all have our favorites and those cars we may like more than others. I also get it, that for the price we paid for these cars, we deserve to have a certain perfection in replication.

What I'm talking about here is that it's always the wrong year, it's the wrong color, it doesn't have this or that feature, or why does it have "this and not that". And how many times have we heard folks say, "I don't understand why they didn't do "this car instead of so-and-so car?"

When I was a young kid, I had a neighbor that used to use the phrase, "They'd complain if they were hung with a new rope". I never understood what he was inferring when he said it. I've learned since I joined this Forum what he meant.

And let me clarify the above too, about being critical at times. We've all done it at some point, and yes, so have I. But if you or anyone here were to go to the "Car List & Reviews" pages here on the Forum, you'll see that I've been very complimentary of I'd guess 95% of the cars I've reviewed. And I've only reviewed the cars that I personally have on my shelf. I'll point out that can't be said by everyone here.

So I didn't get my personal favorite, the 57 Olds, but wanting it was part of the fun of collecting. Am I disappointed that they never did one, sure! But the sun still comes up in the east every morning, so all is well in my world.

Smile

It would have been nice if they did both.

When DM did a '55 Olds I wonder why they picked an 88 over the sleeker 98. How's that?

By the way I have the red-and-white, and the solid aqua convertibles.

I have the red & white one, the solid aqua one, and also the two-tone green convertibles. And of course the hardtop.

With regard to wondering, we all wonder all our lives. Smile

John, my 'issue' with them was back in the day thinking of them as...

...mini skirts! :))

The wheel well openings were squared off but the skirts, exceptionally narrow at the front, made them look like '56 Chevy rear wheel well openings. They were so small I figured, why bother. I like the look of the '55 Olds WITH the skirts better than without them in a squared-off fashion.
