A small query about missing images on the Forum

I was browsing the Net looking for info about Rolls Royce models when I hit on one of my old Forum posts (#18433, from 2014) about the GLM Rolls Phantom woodie. All the photos have disappeared, replaced by a symbol. When I right-clicked on the symbol and selected "View image" I was taken to the Diecast Zone site map which said:

"We're sorry! The page you requested could not be found. Please consult our site map below to find what you're looking for."

I have recently come across one or two other older posts (my own and other people's) where the same seems to have happened. Not the end of the world, and I doubt if many people are going to bother looking for images that far back, but I'm just curious whether they get deleted after a certain time to reduce storage space? I used to load links to photos from Photobucket but since the "CLICK HERE to add image(s) to your post" facility was introduced all my pics have been direct uploads from my PC.

Oh, and incidentally, after quite a long time when it has never happened, the system has gone back to asking me to give my username and password quite regularly when I try to post. Again, no great drama but I wonder what suddenly triggers that? I haven't changed my system or my e-mail ID in any way. Maybe Neo or Model Car World have marked my name as "Potentially Harmful". Or does the system just do random checks?

Graeme. let me assure you it certainly has nothing to do with Neo or MCW.

It is likely the age of the posts. I will make an inquiry on your behalf.

That wasn't a serious suggestion on my part, Dick!

And not a serious problem either. Just curious.

The missing image problem has popped up before

There is some glitch in the software that occurs and the web master has been unable to find it. The images should remain, but they don't.

As far as the sign in is concerned, Graeme, it's most likely a function of how your browser is storing cookies. Make sure they are enabled. From time to tiMe, they can get disabled. The sign in becomes mandatory each time you visit.

I hoped as much, Graeme.

I suspect that the URL addresses of photos linked from other sites have changed subsequent to the time that you made the initial posts on the forum. This is not an uncommon occurrence with many forums. It is more likely that the photo addresses have changed than that the forum here has changed.

No, like I said, my pics aren't stored on a hosting site.

So, Graeme, are the missing photos the ones you uploaded directly here, or the ones that you linked over from Photobucket?

The missing photos are a forum problem that is hard to resolve.

Some of it has to do with space on servers and how it is managed. We've had it looked into but, apparently, the fix would require some pretty massive overhauls to remedy.

Brian, all my recent pics are direct uploads, none for a hosting site.

But I think John K has answered the question. It is to do with storage capacity on the Forum server.

I suppose most of the pictures we post are intended as instant news so maybe it doesn't matter if they are only there for a year or so. I'm just a little surprised because the accepted wisdom these days seems to be that storage capacity has become so vast and so cheap that retaining even gigabytes of data isn't a problem. But maybe not.
