CORGI CLASSICS 9021-A1910 Daimler 38

Corgi produced several really well designed classic cars in the 1960s. These has features unusual for the times and were carefully executed. Unlike other Corgi Toys, these were aimed at the adult market and as a result, had less sales than the traditional child oriented models. Sale to adults was a relatively new idea in 1964.

A feature of these Corgi Classic models was passengers. Few models in this era had miniature drivers and passengers. Like David H., I find these classic early cars really appealing. Other models in the series are the 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, 1915 Model T Ford,1927 Bentley 3 Litre and 1910 Renault 12/16.

The 1910 Daimler 38 was produced from 1964 to 1969 in 1/43 scale. This model sold less than others in the series and while the rest were revived for a second time, the Daimler never appeared again. About 200,000 were made. Surprisingly, you can still find them at very reasonable prices.

An amazingly well-detailed model, given the era. And a very well-crafted post. Thanks, David.

I still have several of these Corgi Classics around, even though their scale variation limits their appeal to me.  Here's one I like, despite its size.

This first set of Corgi Classics was from the 1960s.  They are all very nice!

A bit more information.

This Corgi Classics series of 5 vehicles was introduced in 1964 as an adult collectible with the special name, Corgi Classics. They were much more expensive than standard Corgis with much more detail. The Company Mettoy claimed that all were 1/43 at the time and I think at 115mm long, the Daimler is 1/43. I do wonder if the Ford Model T is closer to 1/40.

Production stopped in 1969 because of a huge factory fire and many of the molds were lost, including I was told, the Daimler ones.

In 1984, Corgi Toys, now under new ownership reintroduced Corgi Classics and either used old models to produce the 1960s models or saved the molds from the 1969 fire. These did not include the Daimler but the other four, with some casting modifications intended to reduce costs were reintroduced in silver boxes.
The wheels are generic for the later series and other models were added, not always at 1/43 scale. The models shown by David and Frank as follow up to my post are from the later 1984 and later series.

Two of the others in the 1964 series.

Thank you Karl for those two excellent MAR references mentioned above. They provide valuable information for anyone wanting more details on these early Corgi Classics.

Stunning level of detail for the mid 60s. Proudly on display all these decades.  I didn't play with it much because I wanted to see it more often, then Mom liked it so much she displayed it in The Classy Stuff Cabinet.
