I recently shared a post about my acquisition of a Russian film production vehicle. Well, I’m excited to add another from the parts works line of Utilitaires Citroen. It’s the 1971 Citroen DS23 in BBC TV livery.
It looks great and is an astounding car. Nice !
Love it but I am surprised that the British public broadcasting corporation would use a French car. I note the roads in Roger’s image are not in Britain, but the steering wheel is on the left for use in England.
@david-green I wondering the same thing. Google AI says:
The BBC used Citroëns, specifically models like the DS and CX, as TV camera cars because their revolutionary hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension provided an exceptionally smooth and stable platform for filming at speed...
Very cool model! The Citroen suspension comment makes sense doesn't it?
On the same theme, I just bought this old Corgi model the other day on ebay:
Corgi Commer Bus 479 Samuelson Film Service, with TV Camera man and Camera
I love these even tough I don't have them. One question...how do the camera persons get on the roof?
@karl Thanks for the explanation. I also wondered about the use of a French car by the BBC.

@bob-jackman Either a spring board or a sky hook I would guess.....
Bob / Jack; I asked internet AI. It replied: "Cameramen access the top of camera cars by mounting equipment on a special process trailer towed by a separate vehicle, which provides a stable platform outside the picture car for the camera crew and gear."
@perrone1 Well now...this old brain learned something today!
@ed-davis Citroen had an assembly plant in the UK at some point, though I'm not sure what the time span was. Nor do I know if the DS-series was made there.
