This is a '59 4 door Savoy sedan, a car at the lower end of the Plymouth range for that year. Originally, this was a "From Russia With Love" taxi from the James Bonds series of releases, but I modified it to be a standard Plymouth. White Box and others have done stock/standard '59 Plymouths, too.
Mike, I applaud your modifications. You have turned an interesting taxi into a most interesting sedan. But I'm just like Frank; my '58 Fury by WM is as close as I can come. As I hunted through my displays, I was surprised how few of the finny fifties I have. Hmmmmml......
I have to say that of all the Plymouth's of the 1950's, the '59 is probably my least favorite. It just seemed to lose all the styling cues that the previous two model years got so right. Oddly enough though, I always hoped that one of the 1:24 scale mints would have given us a '59. I wanted to have one because I didn't really like it. Weird I know, but that's my reason and I'm sticking to it.
Love all the great pic offered on the posts on this thread.
Excellent conversion Mike. I have models of the Fury hardtop and convertible. For years I never gave a thought to the 59 Plymouths but about two years ago I bought a white metal model of the hardtop and then the convertible. I have since begun to really like the Fury for 59...the 1960 is something I'm still working on. MY collection contains many cars I have no interest in owning in 1/1 scale including the 60 but I absolutely love having them in Miniature.
@bob-jackman I felt the as you same about the 59 Plymouth Bob, but nonetheless bought the white metal 59 Fury in white and convertible from Buz and really enjoy them. I added the resin Vector wagon and the Whitebox sedan to complete the line. Other than the overpriced (IMO) wagon I have no regrets. Also, like you, I am working on warming up to the 60 Plymouth. I have the NEO HT and convertible and actually quite like them in 1:43 on display.
@jack-dodds I wanted the complete line of '59 Plymouths and since the White Box was a inexpensive base I created some others. A four door hardtop, a two door hardtop, two door sedan, and convertible to go with my two Vector wagons. Sorry if this is a repeat photograph. Probably should have a dealership diorama.
George, I'm with you on the 1959 Chrysler Corp. line-up (except for Dodge). It was a mid-cycle "freshening" that just ended up looking worse than the original '57/'58 body styles. To my eye only Dodge improved for 1959.
@d-m-holcombe And for anyone looking for a nice but inexpensive 1958 Plymouth hardtop check out the Greenlight version. Since I had a left over top from my 1959 conversions I grafted it on to a Greenlight '58 and created a four door sedan.
