Corgi (Junior) Super Sports Set J3159

53293208157 fd6d2368ca k

The front of the blister has a neat photograph of the real Ford Sierra Cosworth XR4i Brands Hatch Pace Car A405 MHK and the set comprises the following three ready to race models:

BMW M3 Orange Racing number 44 with Canon and Castrol adverts

Renualt 5 Turbo Dark blue/white Racing number 18 with ELF adverts

Porsche 935 Light blue Racing number 74 with Shell Oils, Lucas and Goodyear adverts. Latter two on top surfaces.

All three models are made in Great Britain and date on rear of blister is 1986. I bought them in a toy shop, sadly no longer around, circa 2010.

Note the only reference to these being Corgi Juniors is the J reference number on the front of the blister pack. Three years after this set was issued the Corgi brand was sold to Mattel.

@ed-davis Thanks Ed. Corgi were part of the Mattel empire from 1989 until 1995.

https://uk.corgi.co.uk/community/history-corgi#:~:text=The%20official%20launch%20date%20for,models%20were%20sold%20in%201956.

It didn't take Mattel long to shift Corgi production to China in 1990.

Former Corgi Junior models were issued under the “Corgi Auto-City" label from 1991-1993 and this changed to “Hot Wheels Auto-City” for 1994.

When Corgi became independent during 1995 there was a clause which forbid them from small scale toy vehicle production for a time period which suggests that Mattel took over Corgi just to remove a competitor from this sector of the global market.

@david-green Thanks David. Agree that this is an interesting set and there doesn't appear to be any information on the internet.
