@kevins Wonderful Kevin. I grew up in a suburb of St. Louis. Although we were close to the city our life style was completely different. Mayberry would describe the environment pretty well. We had our own school system, police department, fire department (although it was voluntary) and family businesses. The only chain business I can remember was the A&P Grocery store.
@bob-jackman I spent my childhood and teen years in the same rural environment that you describe Bob and I now appreciate how influential it is in forming a persons values and personality. When I retired from city life and moved back to a relatively small town I immediately felt the return of that "comfortable" feeling and realized how much I had missed it over the years.
@jack-dodds When we moved to Mississippi in 1987, it was quite a change in many ways. We moved into a home within the city limits of Jackson which is the largest city in the state. While we loved our home, the city was changing around us and not for the better. The infrastructure was being ignored and the streets and sewer system was crumbling and city hall didn't seem to care. After 11 years we found a home in a neighboring county on the Barnett Reservoir which is a 32,000 acre lake. The area is quiet and the street in front of our house is more of a walking , bicycle riding and boat launching path which suits us just fine. I bought the house because it also has a 1,300 square foot garage which is where my 1/18 scale models are displayed along with the 1/1 collector cars are kept. The nice thing about where live is that it is still close to the old car activity which we enjoy.
@bob-jackman Wow....what you describe sounds just perfect; what an excellent decision! Good for you and your wife Bob.
@jack-dodds Jack it is near perfect except for the long hot humid summers. About a year ago I googled Alberta, Ca even before I knew you lived there. I told my wife that area of the North American continent has to be the one of the most beautiful spots in the entire world. Having travelled extensively my entire working career I came to the conclusion that every place has it's good points and bad points and how you feel about where you live really depends on you alone.
@graeme-ogg, you're right! Talk about "the good old days!"

@sizedoesmatter John; I'm sure that this type of childhood would be very rich in great memories as well (especially in your era) and so very different from a rural experience.
YEAH! And that's why Our John B. is SO cool!@sizedoesmatter John; I'm sure that this type of childhood would be very rich in great memories as well (especially in your era) and so very different from a rural experience.

And I bet JK noticed in passing just how aesthetically advanced some folks were in the 50s in terms of their domestic colour schemes.
I remember when mom and dad had our first custom built house and the bathroom was in pink and black.
