Even the French were not as risque back in 1899. Normandy looked pretty good back then.

Normandy now. This is Omaha Beach, where my dad landed on D-Day. There are also some photos of the American Cemetary there:

One last photo, taken from the water's edge. Those valiant men had to cross that length of beach under extremely heavy fire before they even arrived at the base of that rise in the distance where the enemy sat under heavily fortified positions at the top. I never was more thankful that my dad survived and never so appreciative of all those who didn't make it as I stood there realizing it was a miracle and anyone survived at all.
