Very Interesting. 

While it is safe to  throw batteries in the trash, it is not safe to store them loose where they can come into contact with metal.   For example in your pocket where they might come into contact with coins or your car keys - they could explode or start on fire.  I catch myself doing exactly that when I change out the batteries in our exterior battery operated security system.

Would provice new meaning to "Your Pants Are On Fire".
